No matter if you use Zoom or Google Meet or another video product to do breakout rooms with students, consider having a Google Slides per group. The only way to access the Add-on is by first going to alicekeeler. When authorizing the Add-on it will let you know that the app is not officially approved by Google, this is correct.

It is safe to install. The created slides will be named the group name and the name of the spreadsheet. These slides will be blank.

The first slide will contain the group name. Optional is to have a Google Slides with prompts and tasks to guide students while in the breakout rooms. Use the Pile of Slides options to send slides to pre populate the slides before sharing with students. This creates a NEW spreadsheet that is view only. Share the link to the spreadsheet in the chat in the video platform to allow students to get into the slides for their group.

By default the slides created by Pile of Slides are private unless you added email addresses onto the spreadsheet for each group. From the slides you set, push a slide to each group slides to allow them to go to a new topic of conversation or activity. These text boxes can easily be deleted by students after they have read your message.

If the slides were shared explicitly with students they will still have edit access.

I will admit that I was slow to jump on the bandwagon due to the time constraints I have as a teacher to commit to building one of these, but then I learned about digital escape rooms using Google Forms and decided to give it a try!

So, I got to work and created my very first digital escape room, which you can find for sale here. For this digital escape room, I created five separate tasks that target literary devices and close reading skills in order to derive the passwords needed to unlock each digital lock.

Just like with every assignment you create, the first step is to begin with the end in mind and decide which skills you would like to assess using the escape room. This will help focus the tasks you create to open each lock.

Keep in mind that these activities need to be short enough that students can complete them in a timely manner. I would recommend having students complete the escape room in class as collaborative groups to add in the element of class competition; however, you can also have students complete the escape room as a homework assignment if needed. Again, begin with the end in mind and create the four or five tasks that you will have students complete.

For my escape room, I created five exercises that targeted literary devices in different ways. These included cloze passages, matching, and close reading. At this phase in the process, do not worry so much about the keys to open the locks.

Just simply create tasks that will target the skills you would like to target. Be sure to vary the types of activities so that students are challenged in different ways as they move through the escape room. Come up with a story that grants a purpose to the challenge of the escape room activity.

You can make up all kinds of storylines just like video games… something like a story about a treasure that needs to be found, or something like a group of people who are stranded on a deserted island and need to be rescued.

For example, if you do a treasure map story, you can give the winning group a bundle of golden chocolate coins as a prize. Or you can keep it simple like I did and give bonus points or candy to the winning group. I would recommend that you start out simple and then can work on sophistication and creativity as you gain more experience with the process.

Before we get to the technicalities of creating the Google Form, you first need to come up with special codes for each puzzle that will unlock each lock. These codes can include anything you want— numbers, letters, words, symbols, etc. If you have a matching exercise as one of the puzzles, you can instruct students to take the first letter of each matched word to create the code like I did here:. Alternatively, you can create riddles to go along with a puzzle that students have to decipher in order to come up with the code like I did here:.

Alternatively, you can have students complete a cloze passage, and use the answers to create a code like I did here:. I would recommend using different strategies to come up with the codes across the puzzles to keep the game challenging and interesting for students.

Be sure to include clearly written directions on each puzzle so that students know how to complete each task and also how to decipher each code. As students work through the escape room, they might find some issues with needing more instructions. To create a Google Form, simply go to your Google Forms and create a new one by clicking the plus sign. This button is located next to the three dots that you just selected. You will then select the type of answer you want your students to answer with.

For our case, we will be using the short answer format so that students can input the specific codes for each exercise, or puzzle.

Change the answer type to short answer by clicking on the drop-down menu to the right of the description or question.The excitement over virtual learning wore off a long time ago. The first Google Meet activity I would like to share is based on something my wife and I do with our five kids.

It requires zero effort on your part and it works wonderfully! One thing that I have learned about teaching remotely is to never start on time. There is always a group of students who join 10 minutes late and will end up disrupting the flow of your lesson.

You can easily create polls using Google Forms or Google Classroom which you can link to Google Meet through the chat. If you teach young students, use emoji to provide context clues about each of the options.

But… what about small groups? How can teachers recreate meaningful personalized instruction that comes with small groups group instruction and bring it online? Enter… Breakout rooms in Google Meet! So what are Breakout Rooms?

Simply put, Breakout rooms are the ability to section your students into smaller groups within your video-conferencing software. Basically small groups in digital form! But… how can you do it?

So how does this work? Unlike other video conferencing software, Google Meet already allows you to open and run multiple meeting rooms at the same time each with their own unique link. It then connects these rooms so you can toggle through them one at a time. However, if you need, you can manually turn these features on to broadcast to all rooms at the same time. Students move to breakout rooms by clicking on the links you provide them.

So… a little inconvenient, but not a deal-breaker by any stretch! Creating the breakout rooms is pretty simple. Name your room. Here, I named my rooms similar to my reading groups. Create as many groups as needed for your assignments. There are two ways to assign students to breakout rooms. First, you can manually assign students while in the Google Meet.Moderators can use breakout rooms to divide participants into smaller groups during video calls.

Breakout rooms must be started by moderators during a video call on a computer. Tip: Anyone who schedules or starts a meeting will be the moderator. There can only be one moderator per meeting. If you transfer or schedule a meeting on someone else's calendarthe other person could become the moderator.

This is also available to users with G Suite Enterprise for Education license and permissions to create meetings. With this idea, I had my solution to a classroom breakout session—it was simple and manageable, and here is you how you can do it, too. For this activity, you will need a lock, a box that the lock will fit on you can also use an old book bag that has two zippers that meet in the middle, as long as your lock fits through them and of course you will need some kind of reward to go inside.

The last thing you will need is the problems or questions you want students to solve. My first thought when I was choosing problems was that I wanted to use something that was not generally fun to work on, since I knew the reward would be an incentive to figure it out. I chose addition and subtraction because I have found that it is a skill that my students need a lot of practice in. There is so much to love about this activity. From a student perspective, It was so much fun and the engagement levels were off the charts!

My classroom was excited and motivated to learn about a topic that is usually tough to engage their interest in—I have never seen students more excited about solving addition and subtraction problems. They were high-fiving and cheering out loud as they persevered through difficult problems. This activity also teaches them grit as well as accountability—the students can not move on unless they find the correct answer.

It is amazing what a little competition and a piece of candy will do. From a teaching perspective, this activity is so adaptable.

It is easily differentiated for classrooms by just making a copy of the Google Form and changing the rigor of the problems to meet the needs of your students. And last but not least, it is shareable with one link. We teachers can not work any harder, so we have to work smarter.
